the Limit Designing Method
According to the calculating formulas for dynamic load rating of rolling bearing, which are specified in ISO standard, we can find that the dynamic load rating, which determines the rolling bearing design level, varies with the differences of rolling element diameter, number and length. Rolling element diameter is the most influential factor, followed by the length and the number. Both abroad and domestic designers want to improve bearing design level by reducing ring section thickness and increasing rolling element diameter. But in designing process, rolling element dimension is firstly determined, then the ring dimension is calculated. When calculating the weakest point on the rings, strength re-examinations is needed, the design is then passed if re-examination meet requirements, otherwise, re-adjust rolling element dimension for another re-examination. Today, optimum computer design is also programmed following this thought.


Our company (institute) originally creates the "Limit Designing Method", which breakthroughs the traditional design method lasting for hundreds of years. Firstly, strength boundary value is determined, another set of design calculation formulas are deduced so that the determined rolling element dimension infinitely approach the strength boundary values(limit concept in mathematics).Accurate calculation within three times can get the optimum mathematics results. Deductions of various bearings' new calculation formulas are completed as one of our projects assigned by Technical Committee of Sichuan province. On condition that component strength is guaranteed, in order to fully utilize the effective space in bearing design, our company(institute) collected funds independently and cooperated with He' nan Science and Technology University to complete two projects of strength theory analysis and strength test research of Rolling Bearing Limit Designing Method assigned by Machinery-building ministry. It has been shown through analysis and research that:
    1) The present bearing design doesn't reach the strength limit, design potential still exists
    2) Reducing ring section thickness and increasing rolling element dimension (especially the diameter) remain the researching direction in bearing design.
    3) As a kind of mechanical basic component, bearings have wide applications in different operating conditions. In addition, reducing ring section thickness will result in manufacturing problems. The strength factor choice must be extremely careful. It should start with application and machining conditions analysis, and then be improved step by step.


Our company (institute) has been engaging in analyzing and researching Limit Designing Method, and applying it into heavy-duty bearing design. We have successfully provided hundreds of heavy-duty bearings for imported equipments and developed hundreds of update types for domestic heavy-duty equipments. At present, our design level is on the international advanced level. Apart from this, we take effective measures to improve bearing fatigue life in material (military-using "group A" electro-slag refined steel), technology, equipment, measurement and assembly.

As a result, the life of extra-large bearing developed by us has reached or closed to its imported counterparts. The average rolling amount of bearings in 1700 type continuous hot rolling mill is over 1800000t,which is 3-3.6 times of past domestic bearings,1.5-1.8 times of imported bearings,2-2.5 times of the required 800000t for rolling mill bearings specified in the national "the Eighth Five-year Plan". At the same time, the patents of bearing designing have been obtained.
